Here’s a scenario to consider: you recently purchased a new Nexus 5 and now you’re faced with the task of transferring all of the data from your old smartphone to your Nexus 5. Well, Google implemented a special feature in Android 5.0 Lollipop specifically for this purpose. Known as Tap & Go, it allows users to transfer Google accounts, apps, contacts and other data between two devices using near-field communications (NFC) technology.
I know what you’re thinking: isn’t it just as easy (if not easier) to simply enter your existing Google account username and password on the new device? You can set up a new smartphone with your existing Google account simply by entering your username and password. However, this method will not transfer existing apps and data to the new device.
Note: to transfer data using Tap & Go, your old smartphone must be running Android 4.0 or newer, and your new smartphone must be running Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer. If your old smartphone runs an outdated version of Android that’s older than 4.0, you are out of luck — even if your new Nexus 5 is running Lollipop.
When you’re ready to transfer data using Tap & Go, launch the app and follow the set up instructions given on the screen. Next, double check to make sure NFC is enabled on both devices. This is done by accessing Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > NFC (toggle the switch ‘on’). Now place your new and old smartphones back to back until you hear a sound (volume needs to be on). You should hear a clicking sound, indicating that NFC is working as intended. Your old smartphone should display the following message, “Copy accounts and data from this device?,” at which point you should confirm to begin the data transfer.
Upon clicking yes, the screen on your old smartphone will automatically lock. When the transfer is complete, your old smartphone will say “New device setup completed.” Touch anywhere on the screen to remove the message. Enter your PIN number or Google account password on your new device and voila, it will contain all of the apps and data from your old device.
