Google released its once highly-anticipated and now well-received Nexus 5 smartphone featuring Android 4.4 just a few weeks ago on Google Play, and the device sold out within minutes, causing shipping delays of up to five weeks or longer.
Luckily, fans don’t have long to wait for other options, as a recent leak of documents and other rumors have said that Nexus 5 will be available on T-Mobile and Verizon within two weeks or so.
To date, Google has made an unlocked version of its Nexus 5 available on its Google Play device store for $349 and $399 for its 16 GB and 32 GB versions respectively. Both the 16 and 32 GB devices have seen a massive delay its shipping times, and they have gone from a minimum of a three-day wait to a minimum delay of up to five weeks for the 16 GB and up to three weeks for the 32 GB devices.
The nexus 5 is available from far more carriers in Canada than in the United States. If you live in Canada, you can get the Nexus 5 from the following sampling of carriers:
Most of the Canadian carriers are offering the Nexus 5 for $99 on a two year contract, and a regular unlocked price of $500.
Nexus 5 from Sprint and from Sprint via Amazon.com
Sprint announced it would carry Nexus 5, but said it would do so for $150 on a two-year contract. However, if you look at the Nexus 5 page on Sprint, or Sprint via Amazon.com, you can see clearly that you can buy Nexus 5 for $49, which is currently the best price you can get Nexus 5 currently. If you order by Monday November 11, you can get the device delivered by November 13.
You can get an unlocked version from Sprint, and you can get that by November 13 too, but we suggest you save your money and get the unlocked version from Google Play because Sprint wants $449 for their unlocked version.
Nexus Coming to T-Mobile
Although TmoNews suggests that the Nexus 5 will be available on T-Mobile on November 20 – the same date T-Mobile expects to launch the Nexus 7 – if you want to walk into the store and get it, while The Verge reported that T-Mobile will make Nexus 5 available on November 14 via online orders. On the other hand, while T-Mobile confirmed Nexus 5 would be available, it specified neither a date nor a price, though it will likely be available for $449 unlocked. T-Mobile subscribers will get the phones using the Jump! Program and new subscribers will likely be able to get the phone on contract.
Nexus 5 on Amazon.com
While Amazon is not selling Nexus 5 itself, individual sellers and electronic stores are selling the Nexus 5 on Amazon, but be wary of these sellers because they’ve grossly inflated the prices for the unlocked versions.
Why did sellers inflate the prices?
We can’t say for sure, but there is one way to explain it. On the first page Amazon results for the Nexus 5, there are 313 separate offers to sell you a Nexus 5, and if you put this together with Google’s shipping delays, you get one possibility. We’re betting that each of the 313 sellers bought a few Nexus 5s from Google, and then listed the devices on Amazon for about $100 to $200 more than the price they paid. Be wary buying from these sellers because some of them no doubt are scams.
