The new 2015 edition Nexus 5 is gearing up to be one of the hottest smartphones of the year. While the Mountain View company has yet to reveal any details about its secretive “reboot” project, several sources have published rumors surrounding the device. In one of the most recent reports, sources have claimed the new 2015 Nexus 5 will sport an ultra-high resolution QHD display as well as a fingerprint sensor.
News of a possible QHD display and fingerprint come from GeekSnack via an unnamed source. The anonymous tipster also claims the 2015 Nexus 5 will cost “less than $500,” which is welcomed news considering the Nexus 6 costs $649 for the 32GB model and $699 for the 64GB model. It certainly appears that Google is trying to revert back to what made the original Nexus 5 so popular — a combination of features, functionality, and a good bargain.
“According to sources close to the matter, the Nexus 5 2015 update will introduce the 5 inch QHD display to the market on an affordable smartphone that will cost less than $500,” said the folks at GeekSnack. “Although this information has not been officially confirmed, word on the streets is that Google is going to target the new phone at those who were left impressed by phones like the OnePlus One and Huawei Ascend Mate 7, which are both flagship killers with relatively affordable prices.”
Several other sources claim the 2015 Nexus 5 will also introduce a fingerprint sensor. We’ve seen fingerprint sensors popping up in smartphones left and right. What makes this one different, however, is that it will reportedly be used in conjunction with Google’s new near-field-communications (NFC) payment system Android Pay. We can only assume that in order to pay for a product using the new Nexus 5’s NFC app, you’ll have to press your finger against the sensor.
The use a fingerprint sensor will undoubtedly add an extra layer of security to the handset, which is something we can all use in today’s day and age. At the same time, it also bumps up the total production cost of the device. Whether or not it’s worth the extra cost remains to be seen. In any case, we’re excited to see what Google has in store for the 2015 edition Nexus 5.
