More Leaked Images of the New LG Nexus 5 Surface Online
Although Google has yet to admit it, I think it’s safe to say the Nexus 5 reboot project is a go. Rumors of a new and improved Nexus 5 handset first appeared earlier this month, with various websites saying “unnamed sources” were working on the project. Since then, we’ve heard rumors regarding the device’s specs, hardware, software, and more. The latest leaks come from Twitter user @onleaks for @uswitchtech, which has revealed renderings of the handset.
@OnLeaks (Steve Hemmerstoffer) published the renderings to his Twitter account, claiming they depict the new LG Nexus 5. Keep in mind that these are “renderings,” meaning they aren’t actual product photos. According to the USwitch website, the renderings are based on “detailed factory schematics provided to accessory-makers.”
It’s not uncommon for smartphone makers to provide such renderings to accessory makers, simply because it ensures the accessories will fit the device. In order to produce a hard-shell case for a new smartphone, for instance, the case maker would need the exact dimensions for the smartphone; otherwise, they wouldn’t know how tall, wide, or deep to make it.
The leaked renderings reveal the LG version of Google’s upcoming Nexus 5 reboot. We’ve talked about this before on our blog, but it’s worth mentioning again that Google is expected to release two different versions of the Nexus 5: an LG and Huawei version. The LG version will reportedly sport a smaller, 5.2-inch display, whereas the Huawei version has a bigger 5.7-inch screen — at least those are the current rumors circulating on the Internet. Many users had complained about the oversized 5.96-inch screen on the Nexus 6, so this should be a welcomed feature.
What’s interesting with these rendered images is that they show a fingerprint scanner mounted on the back, directly underneath what appears to be the camera (the LED flash is just to the side of the camera). According to USwitch, LG has toyed with rear-facing buttons on several of its devices, including the G3 and G4. If you look closely, you’ll notice there’s also a USB Type-C port located at the bottom of the Nexus 5 on the back next to the 3.5mm headphone jack. The rendered images don’t reveal the material of which the new LG Nexus 5 is made; however, USwitch claimed that it most likely feature a metal frame and plastic back, as cited by its leaker.

All indications suggest that Google will launch the new Nexus 5 this fall, with the months of October and November being the most likely dates. This would fall in line with its previous generation of Nexus handsets, which have been launched shortly before the holidays.
