lollipop0123Android 5.0.2 Lollipop has been available for several weeks now, with several Nexus devices receiving the update. Unfortunately, though, the Nexus 5 has to receive the update, forcing users to look elsewhere for a solution. Well, you can always count on the folks over at XDA Developers Forums to find a workaround. Using the method posted by user GROGG88, you can install Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on you Nexus 5.

There are a few things you should know before attempting to install Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on your Nexus. For starters, you must have root access to your device. We could write an entire article on how to root the Nexus 5 (and we may later), but for now we’re going to assume your device is already rooted. You should also have the most recent version of Grogg’s custom recovery software installed. Even if you follow the process step-by-step, there’s an inherit risk of losing your data. With custom recovery software installed, you can create a backup of your device to use in the event of data failure.

Furthermore, your Nexus 5 must have at least 80% battery life to perform the Android 5.0.2 update. You can expect the update to at least half an hour; therefore, your device needs ample power to complete the update. A good rule of thumb is to always charge your device to full capacity before performing any major update.

When you’re ready to install Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on your Nexus 5, head over to the XDA Forums and check out this thread. It walks you through the process of creating a backups, downloading the Android 5.0.2 files, and installing/setting them up on your Nexus 5. As noted in the thread, “Typical disclaimers apply! Flash at your own risk!” Installing unofficial updates may create bugs, errors and other unusual behavior, so install Android 5.0.2 at your own risk.

Of course, you can always wait to receive the Android 5.0.2 update through your cell carrier instead. While there’s no word yet on when the update will be released, several sources claim it will likely happen within the next few weeks. The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 have already received the Android 5.0.2 update, so it’s safe to assume the Nexus 5 is next in line.
