New Rumor: Nexus 5 Gets MEMS & Lytro Plus a Release Date Companion

We’ve said before that the Nexus 5 would get a release at the end of October, and a few rumors we’ve heard pretty much confirms the release date as such.

However, that’s not what we’re writing about today. Today we got wind of a rumored second device to be released alongside the Nexus 5 – a tablet PC with the naming convention of Nexus 10. Yes, you guessed it – a Nexus 10 probably means a Google Nexus tablet PC with a 10-inch display, and we can’t wait to see it.

Apparently, according to the rumors, both devices will be released on October 30, the day before Halloween. because of previously rumors that were essentially confirmed with the leaking of photos and videos from Google itself, we pretty much know for a fact that the Nexus 5 at least will be manufactured by LG, but the Nexus 10 will apparently be made by Asus, what we think is a  pretty great tablet PC manufacturer.

In any case, both devices – if there are two devices – will feature Kit Kat, the newest Android iteration. This one was inspired by and developed in conjunction with Nestle, the famous chocolate candy maker, according to the Android Kit Kat webpage. If both devices carry the Kit Kat mobile operating system, then both devices will have no choice but to sport the 64 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor we’ve been promised because, again according to the Android website, Kit Kat is made for 64-bit processors.

MEMS & Lytro Technologies

OK – now for the real reason you’re probably reading this article today… The camera rumor we heard (read, really). According to Extreme Tech, the Nexus 5 will sport a

MEMS camera with Lyto style focusing abilities.

Yes, you read that right – MEMS and Lytro abilities.

The MEMS technology is found in all sorts of devices such as inkjet printers and the like, and with good reason, once you know what it stands for – Micro Electro Mechanical System – MEMS is a system of really, really small machines made from really durable materials and made to function using electrostatics, wetting and piezoelectricity. You can read more about MEMS and what it is here.

In reality, MEMS is more like nanotechnology than machine, because the parts are made on such a small scale – that’s how the inkjet printers work, by releasing minute ink dots onto the paper. Extreme Tech also says that the MEMS in this case will come courtesy of Digital Optics.

Combining MEMS and the Lytro technology will make for an interesting combination that uses those really small machine parts and auto refocusing to snap perfect little photos – and then focus after you click the button. That means no more photo goofs, and no more embarrassing thumb photos either.

Aren’t you excited? We are!
