RPG fans rejoice! Because you can now play the ultra-engrossing open-world RPG Skyrim straight on your Google Nexus 5 smartphone.

Developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, Skyrim is the fifth installation in the Elder Scrolls franchise. It was originally released in 2011 for Windows PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms. But now Nexus 5 users can spend countless hours slaying dragons and roaming the snow-covered mountains straight from their Nexus 5.

According to AndroidOrigin.com, play Skyrim on your Nexus 5, you’ll need the following items to play Skyrim:

  1. Nexus 5 or similar high-end smartphone (we recommend the Nexus 5).
  2. Trinus Gyre app from Google Play.
  3. Server companion app (download and save to your computer, not your Nexus 5).
  4. Google Cardboard — a DIY virtual headset that will stream footage from the game to your headset.

Yes, this method involves the use of a virtual reality headset, which opens up the doors to a whole new world of possibilities. Gamers are no longer forced to play Skyrim using a traditional computer monitor or television, as the ultra-cheap Google Cardboard allows you to play the game in a VR setting.

It’s important to note that Google Cardboard isn’t some high-tech, next-generation VR headset, however. Instead, it’s an ultra-cheap do-it-yourself VR headset that’s made of just a few basic materials, including cardboard (hence the name), magnets, lenses, velcro strips, rubber bands, and an optional near-field communications (NFC) tag. The total cost for producing a Google Cardboard headset should only run you  about $10. Alternatively, you can purchase it pre-made by searching online.

Virtual reality has made exciting progress over the past several years. However, developing for VR still requires expensive, specialized hardware. Thinking about how to make VR accessible to more people, a group of VR enthusiasts at Google experimented with using a smartphone to drive VR experiences.

The result is Cardboard, a no-frills enclosure that transforms a phone into a basic VR headset, and the accompanying open software toolkit that makes writing VR software as simple as building a web or mobile app.”
