Typing essay-sized text messages or emails on a Nexus 5 isn’t an easy task. You may accidentally tap the wrong key, forcing you to go back and delete it before progressing through the message. Well, Google has a solution to this predicament: gesture typing.

What Is Gesture Typing?

Gesture typing allows you to type full sentences by moving your finger from letter to letter. When you finish a sentence, you simply lift your finger to designate a period. If you’ve noticed a friend or family member sending you ridiculously long text messages in a short period of time, they were probably using gesture typing. It’s an otherwise simple concept that can make a world of difference in the speed and accuracy of your text messages, emails and any other text-based media you create on your Nexus 5 device.

How To Turn On Gesture Typing

First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure gesture typing is enabled on your Nexus 5 (note: it’s enabled by default on the Nexus 5). Once enabled, you can slide your finger to type out messages and text on the virtual keyboard.

To access this feature, click Settings > Language & input > Keyboard & input methods > Google Keyboard. Then touch Settings > Gesture typing > and tap Enable gesture typing. If you wish to disable gesture typing at any time, follow these steps once again and you’ll see the option to “Disable” gesture typing rather than enable it.

How To Use Gesture Typing

The Google Nexus 5 makes gesture typing a breeze. Simply tap on the location of your screen where you want to open the virtual keyboard and slide your finger across the letter you want to use. As you slide from letter to letter, you’ll notice word suggestions appearing in a dialog box above. Wait until you see the word that you are trying to create, at which point you should lift your finger. This will automatically choose the word in the center of the suggestion box, inputting it into the text field.

You can select any word in the suggestion field by lifting your finger from the keyboard and touching the respective word. In the event that Google doesn’t provide the correct word in the suggestion field, continue moving your finger from letter to letter until the word is spelled out.
