Google’s upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone may sport a 3D camera. While these reports have yet to be authenticated, it’s causing some commotion among smartphone users. What exactly does a 3D camera do? How does it work? Will Google really add one in its new Nexus 5 smartphone?

Unfortunately, we don’t know the answers to all of these questions. In keeping up with its long-standing tradition, Google has remained silent regarding the new Nexus 5, going so far as to not even mention it by name. But we do know that Google is in fact working on at least one, possibly two, new Nexus 5 smartphones. The original Nexus 5 was one Google’s best-selling handsets, so it only makes sense for them to bring it back.

Unnamed sources are claiming that Google’s N5 reboot will feature a 3D camera module. There are basically two different types of 3D cameras: a range camera, which produces a two-dimensional image revealing the distance points in a scene, and a stereo camera, which uses two or more lenses with separate image sensors to achieve a true three-dimensional image. Assuming this rumor is true and Google is in fact implementing a 3D camera in its upcoming Nexus 5 handset, it will likely feature a stereo camera.

The website cites South Korean media outlet inews24 as saying that the Nexus 5 2015 will have some sort of 3D camera module. The media outlet does not give a specific name to the phone, however, referring to it as a premium Nexus smartphone. In other words, it probably wouldn’t get the Nexus 5 2015 name as so many are referring to it as,” wrote the folks at ValueWalk.com.

The author goes on to say that the 3D camera is limited strictly to the LG version of the new Nexus 5 and not the Huawei’s version. We’ve mentioned this before on our website, but rumors indicate that Google is planning to launch two different Nexus 5 variants, a premium variant that’s being produced by LG and a cheaper variant produced by Huawei.

Of course, this would be a huge improvement from the original Nexus 5, which featured a traditional 8-megapixel primary camera. Not only was the original Nexus 5’s camera sub-par in terms of megapixels, but many users complained about poor lighting. Lighting issues can usually be fixed through software (there are dozens of photo editing apps on Google Play), but the hardware still wasn’t enough to deliver high-quality photos.

So, what size camera will the new Nexus 5 sport? Other sources claim it will use a 13-megapixel camera with LED flash. This would be a remarkable improvement from the original N5’s camera, allowing users to take sharper, more detailed photos. Let’s hope that Google listened to these users and improved the 2015 Nexus 5’s cameras, because the new handset may have a rocky start otherwise.
